Cell division inhibitor sulA
sulA is a protein from E. coli expressed in the SOS system to inhibit the cell division and is used in part of our growth inhibition module, BBa_K2588021
Usage and Biology
To inhibit the growth of E. coli, it is also necessary to inhibit the cell division. To realize this, we made use of the sulA gene. It expresses the sulA protein, which is found in E. coli as a part of the SOS system.1 In presence of GTP and with an accumulating amount of sulA, the protein binds to the Z-ring forming FtsZ protein.2 This leads to an inhibition of polymerization of FtsZ and consequently the Z-ring can not be synthesized anymore. Normally, cells use this process to prevent secretion of damaged DNA to daughter cells during cell division.3 In our project, we overexpressed the sulA with a modulated ribosome binding site as part of the growth inhibition module in E.coli.
